How Early Should You Check In for a Southwest Flight? A Simple Guide
Flying with Southwest Airlines? One of the most important things to know is that your check-in time affects your boarding position—and ultimately, your seat choice. Unlike many other airlines, Southwest doesn’t assign seats. Instead, it uses an open seating system where passengers board in groups (A, B, or C) based on when they checked in.
You can check in exactly 24 hours before your flight’s scheduled departure. The earlier you check in, the better your boarding group—and the more choices you'll have for where to sit. For the best spot, it’s smart to be ready to check in the moment that 24-hour window opens. You can do this:
On the Southwest website
Through the Southwest mobile app
At an airport kiosk (though online or app check-in is best for early access)
Once checked in, you’ll receive a boarding position (like A18, B12, etc.), which determines when you board the plane. Boarding earlier gives you the pick of the best seats, such as window or aisle spots near the front.
Don’t worry—you can still check in later if needed. However, the later you check in, the more likely you are to end up in group C, which usually means fewer seat options and limited overhead bin space.
Southwest offers EarlyBird Check-In®, a paid service that automatically checks you in 36 hours before departure. While it doesn’t guarantee an A group spot, it typically gets you a better boarding position than checking in manually at 24 hours.
Southwest recommends getting to the airport:
At least 2 hours before a domestic flight
At least 3 hours before an international flight
This gives you enough time to check bags, clear security, and reach your gate without stress. Keep in mind that Southwest’s ticket counters and bag drop close:
45 minutes before departure for domestic flights
60 minutes before departure for international flights
Check in exactly 24 hours before your flight for the best boarding position.
Use the Southwest app or website for fastest access.
Consider EarlyBird Check-In® if you don’t want to worry about timing.
Arrive at the airport 2–3 hours early depending on your flight type.
